โข Identify the four main chambers of the heart.
โข Distinguish between Arteries, Veins, and Capillaries.
โข Explain why humans have a "Double Circulatory System".
โข Understand the function of valves in maintaining one-way flow.
The heart is a muscular pump. It has valves that act like one-way doors, ensuring blood flows in the correct direction.
The heart is split into two sides (Left and Right) and four rooms:
Atria (Top):
The "Receiving Rooms" for blood.
Ventricles (Bottom):
The "Power Rooms" that pump blood out.
These are one-way doors. They snap shut to prevent blood from flowing backward.
(Observe the ANIMATED VIEW for a real-time demonstration.)
Blood travels through 60,000 miles of "pipes" called vessels.
Body uses three different types of "roads" to move blood. Each one has a specific job and structure.!
Arteries:
Carry blood Away from the heart. They have thick, stretchy walls to handle high-pressure "pulses."
Veins:
Carry blood back In to the heart. They have Valves to keep blood moving upward against gravity.
Capillaries:
Tiny bridges where the "magic" happensโOxygen and Nutrients pass into your cells here.
Trace the path of a red blood cell from the Vena Cava to the Aorta.
Heart is a "Double Agent"โit runs two loops at the same time!.
The Pulmonary Loop (Heart โ Lungs):
Blood picks up Oxygen and drops off Carbon Dioxide (the waste we breathe out).
The Systemic Loop (Heart โ Body):
Oxygen-rich blood is delivered to your brain, muscles, and toes.
"Think of the heart like a Double-Loop Rollercoaster. The first loop is a quick trip to the Lung Station to fill up the cars with oxygen. Then, the car returns to the Heart Engine Room for a massive 'Drop' that sends it flying through the second, much larger loop around the rest of the Body Track!"
Left Side: Glows bright Red (High pressure/Oxygen).
Right Side: Glows Blue (Lower pressure/Returning for a refuel).
Heart has its own "Battery" called the Pacemaker (SA Node).
The Spark:
An electrical signal tells the Atria to squeeze, then the Ventricles.
Systole:
The "Squeeze" phase (pumping out).
Diastole:
The "Relax" phase (filling up).
Lub-Dub:
Lub (Valves closing) - Dub (Arteries closing).
Valves act like doors, making sure blood only flows in one direction. The "lub-dub" sound is these doors closing!
